Limit size of attachments

Released (2010-02)

We should limit the size of attachment in order to prevent computers from crashing down when opening a big file. It would it also make it easier and more convenient to forward files, for example with the "send candidates to contact" function.

This could be done, but it would have the risk that a candidate wouldnt apply for the job, as he/she would not want to change the CV to make a smaller file.

When the file is that large, the person usually has put a lot of time and effort in making the CV. Which is particular the case for creative positions that involve graphical skills.

It should be an option for set up in the application form - then it xcan be company by company choice. For us this is essential and happy to take this small risk since it slows down the system a lot, particularly in areas in Asia and Africa where the internet speeed is slower generally.

@neavev, Good idea to do it in the setup per application form. When you can set it up per application form, you could even used a different form with a higher upload limit for jobs that need more "graphical" applications.

Maybe it is also a good idea to publish the file size next to the file-icon, so the user can see it is a large file he/she is about to download.

Also note that we first know the file-size when the file has been completely uploaded to the server. So if a candidate has a large CV and maybe has to wait a while for his file to upload, he will then get the error message that his file is too large. That will give also give some frustration I guess, so the frustration is not gone but we have moved it to the applicant. Therefore there should be a clear message on the application form about the size limit and that the application will be refused if the file is too large.

Agree with your comments - this proposal would work well

First of all congratulations with reaching the Top 5!
I have been working on some details for this idea and I have come up with the following:

First we will create an option in the set-up to change the maximum allowed file size of documents.
This setting is applied to the entire system.
In the same screen you can also choose to show the file size of documents. This helps you determine if you need to wait a little longer than usual to open the file

Secondly you wanted to control the file size of files that are uploaded by candidates.
Therefore we introduce a new option when adding a 'file type' element to your application form like a CV or motivation letter.

For example when you add a CV field (which is a 'file' type) you can adjust the maximum MB's a candidate can upload.
On your application form you should warn your visitors about the max. file size.

So when using this options you want to be able to see how big a file is on various places in the application.

On the overview tab and in the header of a candidate file:

On the document tab:

So this is the idea, I am curious to read your response!

I couldn't view the images uploaded but it sounds good.

We can inform the candidate of the max on the form but it should be clear if they try to go over that limit and the application fails, why that happens so there needs to be a systems error message alerting the candidate when they try to upload a file over the max document size.

I would also want to ensure that in doing this they do not lose the data from the completed application form and have to restart. It should work in a similar way to the errors that come up when you try to submit the application without completing a compulsory field - a pop up that does not take you back or refresh.

I just added the images.

@ neavev: Would a standard error pop-up be sufficient for you?
