Strategy in temp hiring

Temp hiring is an increasingly relevant topic in today's job market. Whether this is caused by uncertain economic times or by the trend that more and more people choose to work on a freelance basis: it is a fact that many companies are increasing their numbers of temporary employees. Temp hiring is an easy way to temporarily increase a company's capacity without the administrative burden and risk of having own staff on payroll.

Maintaining a temporary work force comes with responsibilities. Companies use temporary hiring for all kinds of functions. In general, temporary employees are as important for achieving a positive business result as permanent staff. They work in the same teams, work with the same commitment on the same projects and drink the same coffee at the same conference table. "Temporary" staff are sometimes recruited for several years of employment. It is therefore remarkable that in many companies temps are seen as a separate category. A category which is often neglected.

Our customer ProRail also thought it was a stange phenomenon, and decided late last year to have one united recruitment and temporary hiring department. Whether one searches for a permanent or a temporary position, both application procedures are the same at Prorail. CVs are carefully screened, interviews and agreements are identical. With the only difference that temporary vacancies are introduced through an agency and that its contracts run through that agency. All things considered, there is no reason to have completely separate administrative processes, instead, those processes should be aligned. This idea was quickly realised together with Peoplexs.

Currently ProRail deals with all vacancies in Peoplexs and does not need to have a separate system for hiring temporary staff. With the push of one button a recruiter can see all open vacancies, whether it is a temporary or permanent position. The recruiter can directly see whether the candidate has a history within the company and has applied for any other positions. Vacancies are posted through a portal to the specific agency and the temporary contract can be created and handled directly in Peoplexs.

For Prorail many more possiblities in Peoplexs await. In the future, it will be possible to expand the solution with a freelancer- and an internship module. The system exceeds the boundaries of an administrative tool and is increasingly becoming a strategic tool.

On the Community day on the 28th of September in The Netherlands, ProRail will host a workshop on temporary hiring. Registration is still possible (the Community day is in Dutch). Click here for a video of an interview with ProRail about their experiences.
