Recruiting with Twitter, an example

First, I have only been using twitter for about 7 months (since 16 April, 2009), and in that time I've made 1,090 tweets, followed 418 accounts, 384 have followed me, and in just over a week (when twitter lists were added) I have been added to 40 lists by other twitter accounts.

My account: http://twitter.com/aqlong
Lists I created: http://twitter.com/aqlong/lists
Lists following me: http://twitter.com/aqlong/lists/memberships

These are not super-huge numbers, but the point is that I'm a consistent user and engage in my community with on-topic tweets, most of which are helpful in some way to at least some of my followers. This creates loyalty so that your twitter followers continue to follow you instead of removing you. If you always think to yourself before you tweet something, "is this interesting or helpful to any of my followers", then you're on the right track. If you simply answer, "What are you doing right now?" all the time, you probably won't be engaging with your community very effectively.

If you look at the links above, there is a clear theme here that my account, my lists, my tweets, my followers & friends are by and large related to one technology: ColdFusion. Focusing on one or two themes is essential in my opinion.

To the success story: The other day, without much forethought, I sent a tweet from my company BlackBerry via TwitterBerry:

"I'm curious: how many of you #Coldfusion developers out there don't have a job now or know an unemployed CF dev?"

Within minutes, I had a bunch of replies from my followers. This screenshot is via the twitter implementation in Digsby:

As you can see, some people re-tweeted my question (using "RT" plus @aqlong). So, naturally I followed up with: "For unemployed #coldfusion developers: who would be willing to move to another country for the right position?". Quickly I got these responses:

I also got 3 Direct Messages (DMs) regarding those tweets, but since those are meant to be private, I will keep them that way. Next, I sent this tweet: "#ColdFusion developers willing to move to Holland, we have a Junior Web Dev position now: http://digs.by/jwK please RT" notice that I use the hash (#) directly in front of ColdFusion. When clicked on, the ColdFusion link goes to http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23Coldfusion, which some people interested in ColdFusion use to find out anything & everything interesting about ColdFusion. So, there were a few replies to my tweets that were not even previous twitter followers of me.

Within about 8 hours we had 4 high-quality candidates who applied via our website and began the recruiting process within the Peoplexs system. Interviews begin shortly. ;-)

Gadgets and recruitment, do or don't?

You might have noticed the boom in gadget integration on websites everywhere. There are literally dozens of services and gadgets that could spice up your recruitment website. LinkedIn, Twitter, Wiquet, YouTube, Hyves, Mynameise ? they all have gadgets for you to add on your website. Gadgets are hot, and it seems that if you don't have some on your website, you are not.

Recently I came across this article in The Guardian: "Pupils to study Twitter and blogs in primary schools shake-up". It stated that "the draft plans will require children to master Twitter [..]" One of the goals is for "children to leave primary school familiar with [..] Twitter as sources of information and forms of communication." - The Guardian, Wednesday 25 March 2009 Although Twitter has grown more than a 1000 percent last year, 60 percent of the people that registered leave almost as fast as they came.

So while the future of some services and their gadgets are uncertain in general we will probably be seeing more and more of them in the future. So should you just start to add a few now?

First let's talk about the reason why gadgets are so popular. Often they are easy to integrate on your current website, you will only need to add one line of code and you instantly have a good looking gadget running. Gadgets can also add some intelligent information to you website without you having to manage any content. And finally your visitors will recognize gadgets that are widely used and will find it easy to interact with them.

So do or don't? Hold on, we have to discuss one more thing before you decide to add a gadget. You have to know your audience. There is no use adding gadgets visitors of your website are not familiar with, or your organization is not ready for. If you are thinking about adding the LinkedIn gadget, are you sure your visitors are registered and active on LinkedIn? Other gadgets demand that you dedicate a certain amount of time to it. If you are thinking to add a twitter gadget, are you ready to tweet regularly?

Have you decided yet? No? That's oke. My last tip would be to play around with some gadgets that others already have put on their website and while you do, keep the visitors of your own site in mind.

I hope, by reading this article, you gained some background information on gadgets, why they are so popular and what you should consider before you start using them.

What you think about gadgets and recruitment!?

Blogging

My initial thought about blogging was, what do you write in it and what is it for? Isn't that only for people who have too much time?

After surfing on the internet for a while, did I discover that there are blogs all over - every time entering a search word in Google a blog or community shows up, what a hidden world! Within many blogs I found my favorite which is for fashion. People (most women) are sharing tips on where to buy cheap clothes they have seen in glossy magazines. Well, it doesn't have to be clothes, but the fact that they are sharing knowledge (and what a knowledge!!!) is the benefits for blogs. You get inspiration without looking too hard after it.

This blog will take you to the world of HR - recruiters as you, know what is hot and what is not - in the end it all comes to hire the best possible candidate but how do we do that? And how do we get there? We are anxious to know, share your tips and we are ready to go blogging!

On this happy note - have a nice day :-)
