What is it then with middle leaders?
To be offered a management position, either highest or as a middle leader, is for many a great recognition and satisfaction. Recognition of one's professional work and confidence that you can handle new opportunities and challenges, and the increased responsibility that comes along. Nobody says no to the slightly thicker wallet, which usually is included with the new title, but ultimately it is the professional and personal challenges that make it exciting to grabble with.
There is a widespread misconception that middle leaders just are a strategically positioned person, to act as a messenger and shield for the top, and lightning conductor for staff frustration. On the contrary, middle leaders are an important hub in the flat organizations, which need some solid points, to collects and distribute information. This position leaves the new leader of major challenges as he/she has not previously had to hover over water, but have been accustomed of having hands down the practical work.
So please think of this next time you are laughing of your middle leader:-)
